Nottingham Youth Dance has now been running for over a year, and during that time the company has grown and changed in many ways. We have said goodbye to some of our longstanding company members who have gone on to further vocational training but we are delighted to welcome new dancers into our fold. Each dancer accepted into the company will be given the chance to develop their contemporary dance technique, and to enhance the skills and training they bring with them from their previous experience of dance. But, as a company, we still seek to engage dancers with a wide compass of abilities, ranging from those who have had extensive previous dance training to those with virtually none. At audition we picked those who showed natural ability and talent, whether trained or not, and from this pool of abilities we have created a youth dance company that allows each individual to shine in their own unique way, whilst working within the rigorous format based on professional practice. Our company members, past and present, have had the opportunity to work with some outstanding choreographers, and I’m sure they have found this both challenging and enlightening. The response from the choreographers themselves has been one of sheer joy and delight at working with young people with almost limitless amounts of energy. The whole experience has proved to be a wonderful two-way learning experience for all involved, something that I feel is invaluable and that leaves a lasting impression. We’re still sourcing new work amongst some of the best young choreographers in the UK, in order to provide our dancers with the opportunity to work with professionals. And at the same time we are giving the choreographers a platform (which can sometimes be difficult to find) to showcase new works and ideas. Despite the range and variety of styles produced by our choreographers, the artistic vision remains very clear; to create works using both classical and contemporary dance techniques. This young, vibrant company is going from strength to strength and I truly believe that by creating this working model of a professional dance company, our young dancers are gaining the necessary skills and training they will need when seeking a career within the dance industry. I have witnessed them rise hungrily to meet the on-going challenges presented to them week after week. I look forward to continuing this progress throughout 2008, and hold strong to the hope that we will be able to lead the way in establishing further young companies throughout the East Midlands, as it is both an honour and a joy to be able to work alongside such bright and promising young performers.
